Wicked Word Wednesday #1
Mar 26th, 2008 by satisfyte
Tada! This post marks the first Wicked Word Wednesday since the birth of this new baby blog. Can you handle all of this alliteration? For those new to the blogging scene, there’s this trend going around called “Wordless Wednesday” where instead of posting a normal entry, each Wednesday, bloggers will just post a picture. Often it’s a saccharine picture of someone’s kool-aid stained children playing in the yard, a meaningful scene that makes a statement about current events, LOLcats (my personal fave), etc.
Well here at Wicked Satisfying, I couldn’t resist the urge to capitalize on the alliterative weekly tradition known as Wordless Wednesday and give everyone the reverse: Wicked Word Wednesday. Instead of posting a picture and letting it do the talking, each Wednesday, you will find a Wicked Satisfying Word of the Week to enjoy.
Today’s Wicked Word of the Week?
barnacle.
Courtesy of Dictionary.com: bar-na-cle (noun)
- any marine crustacean of the subclass Cirripedia, usually having a calcareous shell, being either stalked (goose barnacle) and attaching itself to ship bottoms and floating timber, or stalkless (rock barnacle or acorn barnacle), and attaching itself to rocks, esp. in the intertidal zone.
- a person or thing that clings tenaciously.
I’ll admit, when I chose barnacle as the Wicked Word of the Week, I hadn’t looked at the definition yet. I was basing the satisfaction on the mouthfeel of the word ‘barnacle’ alone, and picturing those cute and painful little scrape-inducing pimples of the sea from my memories at the beach, but upon revealing that definition, there are so many other satisfying words!
crustacean, calcareous, floating timber, acorn barnacle!! (maybe they saw wicked satisfying and saw the satisfy-o-meter and threw that in there knowing I’d find it), intertidal, tenaciously… this is a lexicographical jackpot!!
