Squeegeeing

Sitting at my desk today looking out at the pouring rain collecting on the window, it occurred to me that this blog was long overdue for one of the most obvious wicked satisfying things - squeegees. For those unfamiliar, a squeegee is this t-shaped tool with a handle and a rubber blade on the end that’s used to wipe away pretty much anything. “Big deal”, you might say. “I can wipe away stuff with a towel or my sleeve…psh, whatever.” But this is where you’re mistaken. It’s in the way that it’s wiped that the wicked satisfaction emerges.
Wiping away soap on a home or car window, or suds and soap scum off of a glass shower door, bathroom tile or mirror with a squeegee is an experience to be savored. It’s the best if the surface you’re squeegeeing is super dirty first, because not only will you have the satisfaction of seeing the cleaning solution wiped away, you’ll also appreciate how much more sparkly the surface is after you’ve squeegeed. Think of it as a portable windshield wiper of sorts. We all know that new wiper blades are super satisfying, but that’s for another day.
Squeegees can be found in their natural habitats of window treatment centers, garages, bathroom supply closets, and gas stations. Sometimes, a squeegeeing opportunity will appear before you for free at a gas station! See those paper towels and that little bucket of blue liquid with the handle sticking out of it? You know what to do! Use the spongy side of the squeegee to lube up that windshield and then try to contain your excitement as you peel away the moisture line by clean, satisfying line.
Squeegees have also migrated away from their more common habitats into urban areas, often attacking without warning at a stop light or intersection. Don’t be alarmed! You’ve been blessed with a gift from above (or from the guy that needs some money), so consider yourself one of the lucky ones that gets to observe rogue squeegees in their otherwise unnatural habitat. While sometimes a bit more prone to destruction than its suburban or garage-dwelling counterparts, the squeegee of the streets is always there for you when your windshield needs a wiping.
Be sure to keep your eye out for squeegee sightings as the weather gets warmer. You’ll likely see many people armed with these delightful satisfaction-inducing tools polishing up their storefront windows or gussying up their Mercedes for that all-important real estate appointment.
