Pulling apart a grilled cheese sandwich in slow motion

You know all of those grilled cheese commercials tout how good cheese is for you, particularly if you’re a kid because of all of the calcium and vitamins, and whatnot, and as they’re telling you how great it is, they hypnotize you with that much anticipated shot of someone holding the steaming sandwich, pulling it apart with the cheese creating a gooey, calcium-fortified bridge.
Most food items in real life don’t mimic their appearance on commercials, but this is one exception. If you’re able to create a golden brown grilled cheese sandwich (a satisfying entity in its own right), stuff it with at least 1 1/2 to 2 slices of cheese, and quickly cut into it while it’s super hot and then let it sit for a moment to gel back together, you can reenact the commercial perfectly. Just pick it up, hold it in front of you and let the magic happen.
This effect works the best with American cheese, because it separates cleanly once you’ve pulled, but a different type of satisfying result can be achieved with cheddar, swiss, even that shredded ‘Mexican Blend’, offering a higher stringy-ness factor. Either way, the yes factor remains. If you’re lactose intolerant, there’s still hope! My very lactose intolerant friend let me in on a little secret - some brands of pre-sliced or shredded cheese contain absolutely no lactose, and swiss is naturally lactose-free! Just have a look on the package and search for that “contains no lactose” message. Then you can eagerly assemble your sandwich and enjoy the satisfaction in pulling apart a gooey grilled cheese like the rest of us. Mmm.
You can even make your own designs in your grilled cheese toastyness, and I also just found out there is a Grilled Cheese Invitational happening this Saturday in California. Gah! So sad that I’m on the other side of the country. Maybe you can go and tell me how it is.
